The UK and US have agreed to a major bilateral deal that will preserve no import taxes on British medicine exports being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on medicines through the NHS. This pledge guarantees that duties on these key goods will be held at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This agreement comes after recent statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded drug imports, with figures discussed up to one hundred percent.

"This arrangement with the UK strengthens the international landscape for innovative medicines and brings much-needed fairness to American-British medicine commerce," a release noted.

Trade Importance

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's largest export categories to the America, which is clearly the biggest buyer for major UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period prior to September, the UK shipped drugs valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure accounted for a significant portion of British export trade in that period.

"This agreement protects jobs, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific UK Commitments

The agreement entails several key pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it judges new treatments to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to double total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at 15%. Previously, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal takes place against a ongoing dispute between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by assertions that US patients were charged several times more for the same drugs than patients in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while major expansions have been directed toward projects in the United States.

One official stated that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its resources over the past decade.
