Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
