Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
